5 tips for nailing your engagement session

Have an engagement session coming up that you’re preparing for and want to feel confident for? Let’s dig into some details on how to nail your photos 👇🏻

  • Let your photographer get to know you!

Seriously, don’t hold back when it comes to sharing your life and romance with your photographer! A major part of documenting this special time in your life is to tell your story and your photographer can’t do that well unless they know your story! So tell them all about your interests, hobbies, favorite dates, how you met, what you love about each other, etc. In turn, them knowing you and you knowing them will help you be more comfortable in front of the camera and helps to create a trusting environment.

  • Figure out what photographs well on you!

Everyone’s different and has different styles, so there’s not quite a “one-size-fits-all” kind of outfit. Plan in advance what you want to wear and ask your photographer for their advice/input! Some staples I recommend: warm to neutral tones (think toned reds, oranges, yellows, sometimes greens, white, black, browns), a layered texture piece, solids, and complement your partner, don’t clash with them!

  • Find a location both you and your photographer are comfortable at!

Would you be more comfortable shooting at a location you know well or would you rather explore somewhere new? Make sure your photographer knows the area and be aware if any permits are needed to photograph there!

  • Have the right mindset going into your session!

Think of your session as a date with your partner. Plan a fun activity together and let your photographer document it. This will help you be comfortable with an activity and will make your photos more candid and authentic!

  • Feel free to break the pose.

Though your photographer (me? 👀) will be directing you and prompting you with certain actions, feel free to break the pose if you want to do something on your own! We want to document YOU and the prompts are there to help invoke a candid moment between you two. So if you decide you want to give your partner a kiss on the cheek or pick them up and spin them around simply because you want to, don’t hold back because we didn’t tell you to kiss or spin them!
